Birthday Lessons + Coaching Invitations

Birthday season is in swing for me (yes, I'm an Aires).

Honestly? It's been one of my best birthdays yet.

Not because it was fancy or perfect, but because I approached it differently. I learned some stuff I probably should have learned long ago. Below is a snippet of those lessons.

Hoping something might click for you, too?

What's Happening + What I'm Learning

Reframing Birthdays: Name What You Want

I discovered "birthday bingo" this year – a mental reframe that shifted everything. Instead of getting caught in expectations or disappointments, I created a framework that put me back in the driver's seat of my celebration.

It gave me permission to experience my birthday on my own terms. To say what I wanted. To empower my loved ones to celebrate me in ways that fill my love tank. To create experiences that filled me up rather than drained me.

It's simple: Put things on a grid that you want to do. Lots of different things. I had 1 big dance party with a large group of friends, small family traditions, solo activities, partner/romantic stuff, 1:1 friend time, things I want to do but never do, etc.

Aim to get yourself a bingo during your birthday week or month. (I'm almost there!)

(Bingo blackout is bonus).

Reminder to Trust the Process, Self-Coach + Engage Community

For months I searched for the perfect venue with the perfect DJ at the right price for a birthday gathering. Nothing felt right. Availability was limited. After venting to a neighbor, he admitted that he DJs and would love to play my party. And then it hit me – my house could be the venue.

This seems obvious now. But with two small kids, I couldn't see it until I asked myself: "What resources do I already have? Is there an obvious answer I'm missing?" (Those are 2 of my favorite self-coaching questions.)

We arranged for the kids to have a special hotel adventure with their grandma (who flew in from Florida), so they were gone for the night. Our home, it turns out, is an epic house party space. It was the best venue, best DJ, and the best party I could have imagined.

I didn’t settle for a venue that I didn’t really want. I called on my community. I stuck with the planning process (even when it was hard), but I didn’t force it when it wasn’t feeling right. I asked “What’s the obvious answer?”

And, hot dam, it worked out. 🔥

We are Multi-Faceted. Tell Your “People Pleaser” to Honor That.

I didn't invite everyone to everything. And I'm not sorry.

Of course we all contain multitudes. Different sides of ourselves crave different kinds of celebration. Instead of smashing all my people into one-size-fits-all gatherings, I created distinct experiences:

  • A quiet family dinner with my brother, sister-in-law, and niece, sharing our secret recipe chocolate sheet cake and singing our special family birthday song
  • A private karaoke room with 15 mom friends for a night of pure play and silliness
  • A house party for my artist/dancer/festival friends with candles, hugs, and dancing
  • A solo birthday hike, sauna + cold plunge, and journal session

I got clear on what I wanted and why. I named it aloud. I didn't do anything out of obligation. What freedom.

Which of these birthday lessons resonates with you?

Do you have birthday wisdom to share that makes your day/week/month great?

Hit reply and let me know!

Thriving isn’t a personality trait. It’s a result of *skills* that many of us weren't taught or modeled. I teach those skills through a portfolio of businesses and offerings - group wellness programs in workplaces, 1:1 life coaching, and creative projects. I love helping people feel less anxious and more stoked about their lives. My approach? Professional, practical, and actionable — with a dash of woo and sprinkle of sass.

Jen Ottovegio Coaching December 2, 2025 Why Slowing Down Is So Hard (And Why I’m Practicing Anyway) I’ve been thinking a lot about slowing down lately — not as a luxury or something we 'earn', but as a life skill. A leadership skill. A sanity skill. I’ll be real with you:Slowing down is hard for me. I love getting things done. The thrill of checking things off a list is real. This isn't inherently bad. But, sometimes I hide inside the pace. Over the last year this phrase kept coming to me:...

Jen Ottovegio Coaching November 3, 2025 Rethink How You Plan If you’re anything like me (and most of my clients), your brain loves a good plan. You set the goal, build the to-do list, maybe even color-code it. But sometimes the plan still doesn’t work. Something unexpected gets in the way — a missed detail, a human emotion, a blind spot. What if better planning isn’t about adding more detail… but about asking a different question entirely? That’s where Inversion Thinking comes in. Inversion...
